Choosing good prompts

What makes a prompt worth tracking, and how topics and tags keep a growing set organized.

What a prompt is

A prompt is a question a buyer would type into an AI assistant. Recited asks it daily on every platform and country you track, and measures whether the answer mentions you.

The golden rule: leave your brand out

Never put your own brand name in a prompt. "Is Acme any good?" forces the AI to talk about you, which tells you nothing. "Best project tracker for agencies" is the real test: does the AI bring you up on its own?

What makes a prompt strong

  • It sounds like a real buyer. Write the way people actually ask: "best email tool for a small nonprofit", not "email marketing software comparison 2026".
  • It sits where a decision is made. Comparison and recommendation questions ("best X for Y", "X vs Y", "is X worth it") are where being named matters most.
  • It is specific enough to win. "Best software" is too broad for anyone to own. "Best invoicing software for freelancers in construction" is a question you can become the answer to.
  • It covers the whole journey. Mix early research questions, comparison questions, and late "how do I" questions. The Intent column on the Prompts page shows what the asker is trying to do.

Topics and tags

Every prompt needs a topic. Topics group prompts into the themes your coverage map and topic-level metrics are built on, so keep them broad: "invoicing", "pricing", "integrations".

Tags are optional and free-form. Use them for anything you want to slice by later: a campaign, a product line, a persona. You can filter most tables by tag.

Adding prompts

On the Prompts page, use the Add prompt button. You can paste several prompts at once, one per line. Pick one topic for the batch, choose the countries (all tracked countries by default), and add tags if you want them. New prompts count against your plan's prompt limit, and join the next daily scan.

Not sure what to track?

Use Prompt research to explore a topic first. It shows real questions with AI demand, intent, and a live sample of how platforms answer them today, without touching your tracked data. When you find a winner, one click moves it into your tracked set.

Pruning

Prompts that stay at zero visibility for you and every competitor may simply not be questions AI gets asked. Retire them and spend the slot on a sharper question.
